Katy sinnadurai

ballet mistress

Katy was born in London and trained at the Arts Educational School, and at Central School of Ballet. Just before graduation in 1987, she gained a contact as a corps de ballet dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet in Munich, where she remained for three years. During this time she danced in all the major classical ballets, some modern works and operas, and toured with the company to other European cities.

On her return to London in 1990, Katy joined London City Ballet, dancing at Sadler's Wells and touring throughout the UK and abroad for the next four years. With this company, Katy danced in more productions from the classical ballet repertoire, performing a few solo roles. She particularly enjoyed the more dramatic roles, such as Lady Capulet in "Romeo and Juliet", and Emilia in "Othello".

After seven years as a professional ballet dancer, and with over 1000 performances behind her, Katy retired from the stage in 1996 to bring up her young family, and moved to Brecon in 2000. Since then she has become qualified as an exercise instructor, a Pilates matwork instructor, and in 2007 passed her Dance Teaching qualification with distinction. Katy now teaches a variety of classes in Brecon, including Body Conditioning and Back Care at Theatr Brycheiniog, and private exercise sessions. She joined Mid Wales Dance Academy in 2007 as ballet mistress to the senior pupils in the school.

Katy added Pilates and repertoire to the MWDA senior students programme, and has adapted many well - known classical ballets for MWDA's annual showcase. Katy has also worked as a choreographer for over 40 productions at Theatr Brycheiniog, including pantomimes, musicals, fund raising concerts and Brecon Baroque Festival. Katy is also the Artistic Director of Brecon Festival Ballet and created Wales’s first ever full-scale production of The Nutcracker, which had its premiere in 2019.
